They were given a small two-bedroom cabin. Unlike, Trey’s apartment in Marlboro, she found the rustic pine walls and wide windows warmer and inviting than the staleness she felt at Trey’s place. A worn sofa sat in the middle of the room, and a bookcase against the wall filled with books ranging from classics to romantic tells made her feel at home. She trailed her finger over the spines of the book covers. Home. She hadn’t had a real home in years. A part of her tugged at the guilt of how easy it would be to fit into life here. Accepted. To have a home again and be safe.

She pulled out a book and opened the pages. When was the last time she had used a book to read the pages and absorb the words into a story rather than tear out the paper to start a fire in the hearth of the old mansion to keep the little ones warm when Jagger and his men had gone to prey on others?

A shiver raced down her spine, and she closed the book. She would never be able to fully escape him. Not in mind, her hand went to the scar at the base of her neck and not in body. She would carry this damn mark forever unless there were a way for Trey to claim her and change this mark to his. Thinking of the way his lips brushed against her forehead and her cheek right before he ordered her to stay in the cabin made her smile.

When had he gotten so protective of her? Or had he always been from the moment he found her? Either way, with the other men around the camp, he seemed on edge. She could see it in his eyes, the way they flashed between his wolf spirit and his human side. His wolf had gotten restless.

Her inside warmed, and her belly cramped, remembering the way he laid her down on his bed. She throbbed, remembering the way he offered to take care of her.

A light knock came at the door, and she put the book back. Trey wouldn’t knock. He would go into the cabin. She crossed the distance to the door. “Who is there?”

“He knows you’re alive.”

Dakota jerked open the door. Bly stood there, his hands in his pockets. “Bly.”

“Dakota,” he said.

She glanced around, reached to pull him in the cabin. “What do you mean he knows? Who?”

Bly wouldn’t budge.

“We can’t talk out here. Someone will hear us.”

“I can’t come in. Your wolf will scent me inside.” Bly moved away from the door. She glanced around and stepped out beside him.

“There is no one around. Your wolf is with Hawk and Cetan, going over the car. I’ve been sent to bring you up to the main house for supper.”

“You spoke with Trey?”

“Interrogated, you mean?” Bly walked away from the cabin and leaned against the tree. “Damn. Dakota. What the hell is going on?”

“What did you tell him?” Dakota licked her lower lip.
