Chapter 13
The dressing mirror Rafe and I had found in one of Angelo’s unused hotel rooms had a rusted frame speckled with patina, but the glass was intact. I didn’t much like the look of the raggedy, plain-clothed woman staring back at me. She appeared only a few meals away from the people I’d left at the bloodfarm.
“Do you know what you’re doing?” Rafe’s reflection sauntered up beside mine. Naturally, he looked exquisite, even with his Average skin on. Not a hair out of place, clothing perfectly pressed and clean. He even smelled of clean linen. Or maybe he seemed more perfect next to my shabby clothing, matted hair, and pale face.
“Not really. I was hoping you could help me some more?” I could trust him. I was certain of that.
“Why, it cannot be so… The great Lynher Aris is too shy to ask for help?” His hand settled on my lower back, warm and comforting. Sex was out of bounds, but thankfully, touching wasn’t. I’d come to enjoy the small, secret brush of his fingers now and then.
My reflection scowled at his. “It doesn’t feel right asking when you can’t refuse.”
“Darling.” He leaned in, and his words brushed my neck like butterfly wings. “I’ve been maneuvering this curse for years. Don’t fret for my wellbeing.” He eased his hand down my back and around my hip. “If I don’t want to do something, you’ll be the first to know.”
“Very well.” I cleared my throat. He straightened and backed off, but not before casting me a forlorn look over the things he couldn’t have. “In the station, you wiped a hand over a broken mirror, and we stepped through into what I assume was another realm to find Lilith? Was it Hell, your home?”
“Not exactly… but I understand the sentiment. You want to get a look at your overseer?”
“Yes. Just to talk to him,” I added hastily. “He may not be pleased to hear from me.”
“I can’t imagine why,” Rafe said, voice dripping with sarcasm. “Could it be because you trapped him in Hell with vicious demons and a whole swathe of vampires that he betrayed? Not pleased may be an understatement.”
“Yes, well… it seems he tried to save me, at the end, and maybe he wasn’t as terrible as I’d convinced myself he was.”
Rafe’s quizzical expression had me nervously brushing down my tattered clothes. “Some humility?” he asked. “Color me surprised.”
“Yes, well, see…” I stammered. “I’m not sure I would have survived the bloodfarm without him. He’s still a mass murderer and a horrible person, naturally.”
“Naturally.” Rafe smirked and approached the glass. “Let’s dial home, shall we?” He lifted his hand and glanced at me. “You can do this.” He took my hand and pressed it to the glass. “You have a little magic in you. Pull on that thread and cast it forward.”
“I… I’m not sure.” Gerome had always taught us that magic wasn’t for humans. That we were too weak to wield it properly.
“Try. Now, use the
