Before I even opened my eyes, I knew Emory was gone. I’d fallen asleep shortly after he had, cradling the beautiful, young man in my arms and woken alone. Somehow, I felt almost bereft. It wasn’t every day that I found my fated mate and made him mine, regardless of how it would feel to let him go. Someday soon, he’d travel back home with my father’s entourage where I’d never see him again. My stomach cramped just thinking about him leaving my home and my life forever. Most werewolves waited their whole lives to find the one wolf Mother Nature had chosen just for them.

Few werewolves ever found them. Mine had come into my life as a small, beautiful, innocent man with the most incredible eyes and the softest skin I’d ever tasted. When I’d swallowed his blood after the mating bite, it had been like ingesting a nectar made only for me and in a way, I guessed he was made just for me. He was absolutely perfect in every way a man could be. From his small stature to his gentle temperament, to his sweetness, he was perfect. I couldn’t think of ever having anyone but him in my life and in my bed.

I rolled over, looked at the clock on my bedside table, and sighed. Unfortunately, the only person who would be in my life and in my bed was due to arrive at my house with her mother in only a few hours. I groaned and sat up, noting the puddle of Emory’s dried blood on the white pillowcase. I’d been able to swallow most of the blood from the mating bite but not all. Explaining the mess to the housekeeping staff was going to be interesting, especially considering how they were all werewolves with a nose that could pick up scents all day long.

I rolled out of bed, grabbing the pillowcase, and yanking it off before walking over to the fireplace and tossing it inside. I threw more wood on the banked embers and then stoked the fire. Chances were, whoever Mrs. Holmes assigned to clean my room would pick up Emory’s scent in the rest of the sheets.

“Fuck!” I stomped over to the bed and yanked the rest of the sheets and the remaining pillowcase off the bed before balling them up and tossing them on the fire as well. I glanced back at the bed, narrowing my eyes as I contemplated simply setting the whole thing on fire. I was busy poking at the logs to stoke the flames when there was a knock at the door. I dropped the fireplace poker and grabbed a silk robe from the chair before walking over and cracking the door open just enough to stick my head out. When I saw my sister standing outside with her arms crossed, I cursed inwardly.

“Don’t curse at me. Let me in. I need to talk to you.”

Fuck. Sometimes I hate telepathy. I blocked her. “What do you want? I’m busy.
