Thirteen

The world appeared bleak outside the bus windows. Dull and moody as if someone had flicked on an app filter.

I hopped on the first bus heading downtown after I left the Vampire District. It was still early in the day, but I couldn’t bring myself to return to the house. I had some thinking to do. Plus, my vision blurred every few minutes and the top of the backpack I clutched to my chest was now soaked.

I had vowed to locate Mom’s lab and bring the antidote to Cordis. The problem was I didn’t know where to look. Lately, I had rarely even seen Mom. She tended to her gardens when I got home from school or was attending meetings at the Lunar Circle. I used to roll my eyes at dinnertime when she raved about a cross-species of flower or some seed germination period. Even for a witch, her obsession with flora ran a little too deep.

Little did I know she was a scientist. A bona fide scientist whose work saved innocent lives. My eyes stung again.

Mom… I’m so sorry.

I walked in circles at the community park near the Institute until the sun began dipping below the horizon. During my back and forth with myself, I decided to keep Zyron in the dark. I still doubted he had anything to do with my parents’ assassination. The Institute wouldn’t work with or use infected vamps, would they? This argument was absurd. But I wouldn’t go against my brother’s wishes. And, as much as I hated to admit, I trusted Cordis would take care of Kai.

The gate guard waved me in. I guess the rare violet hair was an ID in itself. My hair color made me well-known at the Institute, and although most warlocks were welcoming, a few regarded me with suspicion. I held my head high and kept to myself. I couldn’t help who I was—a witch with Arcana magic.

I slinked through the entrance and down the main hall, holding my head down. Conflicting emotions washed over me as I contemplated seeing Zyron. About keeping information from him when he was actively searching for my brother.

As I rounded a corner, a few figures descended a staircase. My eyes found Zyron’s in an instant. I simply couldn’t escape his commanding presence.

“Meadow.” Zyron beelined for me, a hint of concern in his voice. “I sent a ride for you and he just reported you weren’t there. Is everything okay?”

My eyes widened. Had I forgotten? No, Zyron hadn’t mentioned anyone picking me up.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know. I took a bus,” I said, forcing a smile. We don’t know who we can trust. My brother’s words echoed in my head. For now, I’d keep my visit a secret, though I desperately wanted to confide in Zyron.

Zyron stepped closer, leaning his shoulder against the wall.

“You’ve been crying,” he whispered.

Oh no, my eyes moistened at his comment, and I truly didn’t want to cry in front of him. How embarrassing. I blinked the tears away.
