Chapter 20

Just outside Richmond, Virginia

Day 10

It wasn’t the first time Hannigan had slept at the office, even before the long stretch of nights, but he’d been a little surprised at just how soundly he’d slept. Ito Takao’s body had been removed and disposed of, though he didn’t ask Kumar for details on exactly how that disposal had happened. All he knew was that the former CEO’s couch was far more comfortable than the one in the break room, and it actually pulled out into a bed. For the first time that he could remember, he slept an uninterrupted slumber, deep and dark and felt well-rested, even though he awoke with the rise of day. The Longview offices had been thrown into disarray in the wake of the mess with Takao and it had taken almost all of Hannigan’s charm and endless energy to coerce everyone into coming together and getting on the same page. Of course, as far as the Longview people knew, Takao had abandoned them— he hadn’t died, he’d just— left, thrown them to the wind, dashed away to save his own skin, and framing his departure in that way had helped put a better spin on Hannigan stepping in to replace him.

Of course, Hannigan had said all the right things— he was not replacing Takao, he was simply stepping into a role that allowed more coordination. Takao, in spite of his sudden rush to abandon his people, could not be replaced. He was not the CEO, he was just Hannigan Gusano, like he’d always been. They’d gathered everyone together in the cafeteria, or whoever was left, anyway, numbers that had dwindled down to just over a dozen or so people. He’d stood at the front of the room and given everyone permission to leave, said he’d totally understand if anyone had family to return to, lives to try and recover— or if they just didn’t want to toil their days away at the office. But he was sure to make certain they were aware that they at least had some limited supplies at Longview headquarters. Food, some water, a roof over their head, at least some measure of security. He’d relayed the news he’d heard about Richmond, about how the fires and the violence had all but consumed the city. They’d been spared the worst of it, being located just outside the city limits, but there was no telling how long it would be before the violence spread.

Safety was not an evergreen thing, these days, it was quite the opposite, really. Grainy and fleeting, easily slipping through your fingers. That was the biggest promise he said he could make to the gathered group— safety. Between Kumar, Ansel and even Hannigan himself, he promised a measure of protection, armed men who weren’t afraid to use violence to hold back the tide. Kumar’s reputation was already well-established and although Ansel wasn’t exactly the epitome of machismo, they’d seen his face around enough to believe they could depend on him.
