“WHAT DID YOU THINK?” Andrea asked, as soon as the massive doors of the hotel closed behind them.

“I think I wouldn’t want to be in Blackheart’s shoes,” Duncan said truthfully. “I doubt Helms will be that restrained once we’re gone.”

“I meant about the equipment.”

“Exactly what he said. State of the art.”

“Then what went wrong?” Andrea asked. “Despite all that business about smarter thieves.”

“The system was disabled.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

He mentally reviewed his impressions of the man who had shown off his equipment with an openness that argued against his having anything to hide.

“It had to be someone on the inside,” Duncan said.

“Blackheart?”

“Or someone working for him. Someone he trusted.”

“He didn’t mention anyone else.”

“A company with a reputation good enough to convince Helms to hire them isn’t a one-man show.”

“So, what now? Are you going to tell the police that? Or Helms?”

“Before we do anything else, we’re going to call in the reinforcements.”

“Reinforcements?”

“There’s no reason not to use the advantages Griff’s contacts at the agency offer.” After all, he thought, Griff had gotten him into this.

Andrea nodded. “You can call him from the house. We’re only a few blocks away. That will be quicker than going back to your hotel.”

Which was all the way across town. Since he wanted to get Griff onto this as soon as possible, going to Andrea’s made eminent sense. Except Duncan wasn’t looking forward to seeing where Andrea had lived with Paul. Actually, he wasn’t looking forward to being alone with her. Other than during the cab ride from the restaurant to the hotel, there had been people around them all afternoon.

“Is that okay?” she questioned hesitantly. “Or do you need to get back to whatever you were doing when I called you this morning?”

“I need to touch base with them,” he said.

That would be politic, but not urgent. After all, the job was finished. He had only been tying up loose ends before he was scheduled to return to New York.

Since he wasn’t leaving, he supposed he should call the hotel and tell them he would be staying a few more days. And notify the airline that he’d be taking a later flight.

“So…my place?” Andrea asked again, looking at him over her shoulder as she moved to the curb to flag a cab.

And because he couldn’t think of a single legitimate excuse to refuse, Duncan nodded.
