Chapter Eleven

The Pirate Named Laura

“Slow down,” barked Henaru, dragging his feet behind Kamari. He could feel the summer heat through the shade of the trees as they went on to the coast. Lucky for him, there were a few moments where the breeze carried a spray of ocean water to his face. He tried to enjoy the air while walking, but he couldn’t keep up with Kamari at the same time. “Can we stop for a second?”

“No,” said Kamari.

“But I’m dying back here. If we don’t stop soon, I think I’m going to faint.” Henaru began panting, trying to make his condition seem worse than it was. Kamari wasn’t falling for it. She kept walking while clutching her bandaged arm.

Henaru studied her closely and noticed that she wasn’t even sweating. “You’re not hot?”

“You’re the one who’s got all the crap on.”

Henaru plopped down on the ground and let his arms flail to the side. “Do what you want but I’m stopping.”

Kamari spun around frowning, ready to scream at the boy, but held back, remembering the approach that Tomoe took with him. Yelling at him wouldn’t get her anywhere, so she tried reasoning with him. “Henaru,” she sighed. “If we stop now, then we won’t hit the coast before sundown.”

“So…”

“Do you wanna di…” Kamari rubbed her fingers across her forehead while shaking her head. She instead climbed a tree to see how far they were away from their destination. She stood on a steady branch and looked out to see the sapphire waves pushing in the tides of the turquoise water on to the sandy beach. They weren’t far now, and all they had to do was walk a few more minutes. Kamari looked at Henaru, rolling his ankles, stretching and yawning, getting comfortable. She got down from the tree and tried the same approach as before. “We should keep going, we’re almost…”

“I’m not going anywhere until I catch my breath.”

Kamari was going to give up on the soft approach and just punch the boy or leave him all together, but then she had thought. “You know something,” she said, putting her index finger in the air. “The longer we take to get to the beach, the longer it’ll take for us to get to Blue Star City and find you a master.”

“Hmm,” said Henaru, getting to his feet. “Then why are you wasting time climbing trees? We should get going now.”

Kamari held her hands out as if she was strangling Henaru as he walked off. Then she followed behind, cursing his name.

The pair continued walking on and Henaru swung his shoulders back as if he had something to drive him now. Then he saw Kamari speed past him and the memories of her fighting the bandits came back to him. “You know I was thinking something.”

“Surprise, surprise,” mocked Kamari.

“What if I don’t find a master in Blue Star City?”

“What if?”

“I thought that if I don’t, then you could probably just train me yourself.”

“And why exactly would I do that?”

“Well, I hate to admit it, but you’re a pretty okay fighter.
