OTAUIRA

The story of Otauira and its two contemporary waka, Potaka and Te Whatupu-rangi, is mirrored in the tradition of Moanawaiwai. Tama-ahua, of the Kurahaupo, organised the construction of the three waka while he was in Taranaki for a return voyage to Hawaiki. Tama-ahua himself captained the Otauira and first journeyed south to Arahura to collect pounamu before commencing the long passage home. On his arrival in Hawaiki, Tama-ahua caused a Kura-hau-awa-tea (red glow of the rising sun) to signal to those who stayed behind in Aotearoa the safe arrival of the three waka. (See also Moana-wai-wai.)
