2.2.7 Bacterial Foraging Optimization Algorithm

The bacterial foraging optimization (BFO) algorithm is based on the social foraging the behavior of Escherichia coli bacteria for non-gradient optimization problems [24]. The algorithm mimics the four main characteristics such as chemotaxis, swarming, reproduction, and elimination-dispersal to solve this problem. The chemotaxis simulates the movement of an E. coli cell through swimming and tumbling via flagella. The swarming represents the movement of bacteria as swarms when food density is high. The reproduction represents that unhealthy bacteria ultimately die, and healthy bacteria split into two bacteria. Therefore, the swarm size keeps constant. The elimination-dispersal represents the killing of all bacteria or the dispersal of a group to a new location when changes occur in the environment in which the bacteria live [25].
