3 Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse and Veterans Park Museum

1 Lighthouse Point Dr. N., Dunkirk, NY 14048; 716-366-5050 www.dunkirklighthouse.com

The 27-mile reach of the light shows the power of its 61-foot Fresnel lens—only 70 of which are still used in the United States. The museum contains military artifacts from WW1 and WW2 and the Korean War, as well as information about the site’s history—in fact, the first shot of the War of 1812 rang out near the structure’s west bank. Built in 1826, the lighthouse helped ships come into Dunkirk Harbor safely, but by 1875 the tower had fallen into disrepair, and a new stone one with a Victorian residence replaced it. You can explore the lighthouse, climb to the top, and gaze at Lake Erie from the observation deck. The facility also offers seasonal ghost hunts and festivals. Open from May to October.
