Eighteen

Attacked

Tess jerked her shoulders, arching her back as she yanked her body and arms about in a crazy flutter, trying to shake free of the claws that were ripping at her skin.

Nothing worked.

She felt the soft fur and knew it was the black cat S.W. had discovered the other night. With her eyes closed, she snatched at it, trying to find the scruff of its neck.

She missed on the first couple of tries, and the creature tore at her back, trying to rip her to shreds. The tiny claws were vicious weapons.

Finally, her fingers found the loose fur, and she gave the cat a hard tug, pulling it free even as it continued to hiss and screech. The claws pulled at the threads of her sweater, but Tess didn't care about the damage.

With a flick of her arm, Tess tossed the animal over to the bed where it landed on its feet in the center of the mattress. The bedsprings creaked in protest. The cat was larger than she had realized.

In a matter of seconds it had turned again, and before she could even begin to move for the door, the beast lunged.

She lifted one arm to protect her face, and the claws dug through her sleeve. She felt a searing pain in her forearm and realized the claws were drawing blood.

Frantically, Tess shook her arm, trying to dislodge the frenzied attacker, but the cat clung fiercely, refusing to let go.

Again, Tess had to reach for it, and grasping it again by its dark fur, she tugged. The cat didn't release, but she gripped it even harder and yanked at it until the claws gave way.

When she released the cat in midair, it twisted about and landed on the carpet, this time turning and scampering toward the door.

Tess was left looking at her arm. The knit of her sweater had been ripped, and her arm was sliced open. Blood coursed out of the wound, a narrow fissure which stretched from just beneath her elbow almost to her wrist.

Remembering first aid instructions about applying pressure, Tess pressed her thumb down on the spot where the blood seemed to be spurting, but that didn't seem to do much good.

The blood continued to flow, spraying around her fingers and running down her forearm. She prayed the cat hadn't severed something important, but through the blood, she couldn't really tell how badly she was hurt.

As she tried to step toward the bedroom doorway to call for Mrs. Wentworth for help, dizziness rippled through her head. She was losing it.

Black spots appeared before her eyes, huge black spots that grew larger and larger and began to merge with each other.

She had a sense of losing balance, of tumbling forward, but then everything seemed to shut down, and the blackness became total.

When Tess's eyelids finally fluttered open again, she could see only a bright white light. It was a huge, round orb of radiance glowing over her head.

Slowly, she lifted her arm, reaching toward the light, uncertain of where she was or where she was going.
