Chapter Fifteen

‘I don’t believe this.’ Teresa walked into the kitchen and threw a bunch of keys on the table.

‘What’s the matter, love?’

‘The van’s not starting. I’ve just loaded everything for the deliveries too.’ She pinched the top of her nose.

‘Hey, come and sit down, love. This isn’t like you to get so worried about something like this.’ Elsie walked towards Teresa, wrapped her arm around her shoulder and led her towards a stool.

‘Sorry, I was up half the night with Rueben. He’s got a temperature and was really poorly.’ Sitting down, Teresa yawned.

‘Aw, love. Why didn’t you call in sick?’

Teresa shrugged. ‘Gavin’s home so he’s looking after him.’

‘Go on home. If Gavin’s there, he can look after Pippa and Toby, and you can Rueben can snuggle down for a movie day. That way you won’t be worrying about him and you should be able to get some rest.’

‘Are you sure? I feel bad because Gavin’s off work, anyway.’

‘I’m positive. We can cope. I’m sure Wendy will be happy to do the deliveries in my car and then look after the coffee and cake area. You know how she likes to get out and about, and I’m pretty sure she hasn’t got anything wedding-wise to work on today. You get off. We’ll cope, won’t we, Olivia?’

‘Definitely.’ Olivia nodded.

‘Okay, if you’re sure?’

‘Yes, we’re sure. Now off you go.’ Elsie squeezed Teresa’s hand.

‘Hope Rueben feels better soon.’

‘Thanks, Olivia. I hope so too. He’s been looking forward to the bay’s New Year’s Eve celebrations all year.’

‘That’s still a couple of days away, so I’m sure with lots of rest, he’ll be better.’ Elsie passed Teresa her coat. ‘Now, if he’s still poorly in the morning, I don’t want you coming in, okay?’

Teresa nodded. ‘Thank you, Elsie.’

‘Give him a special get-better hug from me, love.’ Elsie shut the back door behind her before reaching for her mobile. ‘I’ll give Albert a call and ask him to come and take a look.’
