By the 1860s, Quanah was a warrior whose prominence was rising, and the Quahada Comanche held the Llano Estacado, the staked plains of Texas. During the decade, the Quahada continued to live a traditional life, exploiting the buffalo and raiding settlements, and in an attempt to curtail Comanche raiding activities, Colonel Christopher “Kit” Carson led a column of about 300 troops out of New Mexico to pacify the area in 1864. The soldiers found and attacked a large Kiowa village of over 175 lodges, but the Kiowa alerted their Comanche allies, and the combined Native American force prepared to face Carson’s troops. At Adobe Walls, a trading post abandoned in the late 1840s, Carson and his troops faced a mixed force of Comanche and Kiowa warriors numbering in the thousands. Carson and the soldiers defended themselves by skillful use of the column’s two howitzers and eventually were able to withdraw from the field of battle with relatively light casualties. Both sides claimed victory, but the battle was indecisive.
