CHAPTER TEN

"We are under attack! Repeat, we are under attack!"

"What's happening? Why are they attacking Abyssal?"

"We need medical evac! Atmo is compromised, and we have three people in critical condition!"

More messages poured over the emergency channel. The channel was open, which allowed anyone to listen to what was being broadcast. In theory, there good reason for that, considering Abyssal and the other stations in the system couldn't rely on law enforcement to reach them.

It wasn't going to work out the way the optimists had thought it would, but they were admirable for trying. Chill could have warned them there would be plenty of people with bad intentions looking to profit from the misfortunes of others, which meant Abyssal and the rest of the system only used the channel looters wouldn’t make the situation worse.

It was annoying how common situations like that were, and unfortunately, the channel saw a fair amount of use. It allowed merc groups to come in and help, which provided a sweet cred bump to their bottom line if they needed work.

Not sweet enough to have merc corps do it all the time, but still.

This time, hundreds of calls came in, and nobody answered them. Either the mercs had joined the fighting, or they were steering clear. The latter was a good idea, the kind that would keep them from getting involved in a battle they had little to gain from.

She still couldn't believe they were heading toward the fight instead of away from it. They were breaking all the rules, making the wrong decisions, and it was likely going to get them killed, but she'd made the call. Not only had none of the team questioned her, but they'd endorsed her decision, which meant she wasn't as crazy as she thought she was.

Then again, they could all be nuts. Since they were probably going to die soon, that didn’t matter much.

The signals they were picking up gave them insight into the battle. The Dominion and Perdahin frigates had gone off to fry bigger fish elsewhere in the system, but they had left the fighters and the 'vettes behind to mop the area around the planet up. They'd positioned themselves around Abyssal and opened fire on ships that tried to undock, and there were plenty of them.

The ones that didn't were also being fired on. The attacks had opened the docks to vacuum, killing hundreds of people in a matter of minutes.

Once the docks were cleared, their troops went in to take the station. They clearly had no rules of engagement, given the emergency broadcasts that made it out. There didn't appear to be any centralized command structure in place or even much of a plan to take the station. She would have made a break for the comm systems on the station first since that would give the invasion force full access to the defenses on the station as well as a general idea of the population centers. It would also keep the people on the station from getting help from outside.
