CHAPTER NINE

She wasn't going to be alone. Kortez and Ivan were coming to help, and the Janissaries were approaching from the other side.

As nice as it was that she wasn't alone in the fight, they would annihilate anything and anyone shooting inside the docking area. Chill didn't think that was a good idea if these mercs just needed time to adjust to the fact that not everything on the station was trying to kill them. If they still wanted to start a fight after they figured that out, she would be more than happy to oblige.

There was no point in assuming they wanted to fight, though.

Chill raised her hand to stop the rest of the crews from attacking and gestured for them to take cover as she stepped out. The ship’s cannons tracked her as she approached.

"My name is Chill," she announced, letting the suit's external speakers give her voice emphasis as she approached the Xo. "I'm with the Dead Evil Mercenary Company, and you're pissing me the fuck off. If you really want to start a fight, I'm more than happy to oblige. If you don't, lay your weapons down and disable the point defense systems on your ship. You have thirty seconds to comply, or we’ll assume you have violence on your minds."

If these mercs had been drawn to the station by their messages, stating her name and the name of their company should calm them down. If they still attacked, they would pay the ultimate price for it.

The Xo crew backed away from her with terrified looks on their faces. It took her a few seconds to notice the empty mechs moving in behind her, weapons out and ready to attack. Chill assumed she had Alex to thank for the backup. The others were on the way, but being flanked by half a dozen heavy suits was impressive.

For a second, it didn't look like the Xo would cooperate. They were too well-armed to be a random merc crew looking for adventure, and if they picked a fight, it wouldn’t be easy to drive them back into their ship.

Finally, one of them raised a hand and barked orders in Xo. Given their response, he had ordered them to lower their weapons but be ready to fight. Chill maintained her position in front of the loading bay doors. Putting on a show of force was one thing but making them think she was going to take over their ship was another.

The apparent leader came over. Her suit made her about a half-meter taller than him. She wasn't often taller than Xi- or Xo-Trang, since their long, slender bodies let them look down on almost every other species they encountered.

Physically and psychologically.

"Good choice," Chill commented and crossed her arms. "Now, is there a reason you came in guns blazing?"

The leader looked up at her, then pulled his helmet off, revealing the hardened scar tissue on the top of his head. The Xo-trang had their feather crests removed—often forcibly and always
