I hoped she’d stay in one of the chairs in front of my desk, or maybe walk around, checking things out, but no, Madelyn insisted on looking over my shoulder as I typed out my statement. Normally, I typed slowly and pretty accurately. With her hovering, I typed like a spastic and she reached over and yanked the paper from the Smith-Corona.

“Get up,” she said and slid into my captain’s chair when I obeyed. She grabbed two sheets of typing paper, sliding carbon paper between them. “You’ll want to keep a copy, won’t you?”

“I guess.”

She threaded the pages, typed in the date and time, as I’d tried to and then went, “OK. Dictate.”

She typed nearly as fast as I dictated. I kept it simple. I came, I saw, I caught the bastard. I added what his rotundity had told me as a kicker. In less than twenty minutes I had a first class statement ready for the police.

“You ready for lunch?”

She stood up and stretched, those full breasts pressing against her dress. “Sure, what do you have in mind?”

“Italian.”

She nodded and I told her we’d come back to get her luggage, which was upstairs in my apartment.

“Sounds like a plan to me.” There was a hint of mischief in her eyes that raised my heart-rate.
