OK, you finished the major round of sorting! Three or four hours may have passed, and you are doing great! What’s next? Addressing the “maybe” pile.
The truth about the maybe pile is that if an item made its way there to begin with, it’s safe to say you can donate it. It’s just like the awkward stage in a relationship before breaking up; you care for that T-shirt, you’ve had fun times together, but the color is a little off and the fit is a little too…something. You know something isn’t quite right. Dragging it out only makes the inevitable harder. Donate!
TAKE ACTION: Keep a discerning eye on the “to-do” pile as the day progresses. Make sure it doesn’t become so gargantuan that it will likely never be completed. Here’s a helpful trick when evaluating the to-do pile: How many hours will it take to complete all these tasks, including travel to and from each location and time spent there? If you were to give yourself an hourly rate, would it be worth your time to complete these tasks? If the tasks amount to four hours of effort on your part, is it worth your hourly rate times four to complete? Food for thought.
