THE RESOURCE CIRCLE
One technique for dealing with anxiety and learned helplessness involves using a resource circle. Simply concentrate on a time or an event in which you were completely successful. The event could be winning a sporting contest, or giving a brilliant speech, or receiving an award. In your mind, draw an imaginary circle on the floor or ground next to you. Now try to access that past event. Try to see it. Try to hear the sounds around you as if you were there, and try to invoke the feelings you experienced when the event originally happened.
When you believe you are as close as possible to reliving the event, take a step into that imaginary circle. Then step out and repeat the exercise, recalling the event as it sounded, looked, and felt at the time. Now do it again without using the three senses. Just step right into the circle. You should be able to immediately access that same winning feeling just by stepping into the circle. This is called a resource state.
I recently spoke to a man who told me he felt horrible about being overweight, but his patience and his belief in himself had come to an end. He was stressed. He remembered the resource-circle technique, mentally drew his circle on the ground, and stepped into it. Not only did his stress level go down, but he was able to strengthen his positive belief and mindset. He controlled his anxiety and reached his weight-loss goal.
The most powerful coaches, business people, athletes, professionals and scientists are those who, on cue and largely unconsciously, put themselves into powerful resource states by accessing an effective mindset. Many are able to do this in spite of horrible things that occur in their lives, whether it’s ill health, financial breakdown, family problems, or other tragedies. They can keep themselves in a successful resource state by triggering powerful mechanisms in their minds. A resource circle is a state of mind you can step into to access a resource state. A resource state can also be accessed by an action like watching a motivation video of listening to a inspirational lecture.
Often before a football game, NFL players will pound each other on the shoulder pads. I thought this was a way to check the pads until I learned about resource circles. But the fastest way in which players get motivated and put themselves into a winning mindset is the chanting they do in circles before a game. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is one of the only quarterbacks who leads this type of chant. It whips the team up so fast and so well that they are one of the fastest teams out of the starting block in the NFL. You can also use resources states to create your own mindset, just as NFL players do.
One resource state I used as a pro tennis player was the way I bounced the ball before a serve. I would bounce it exactly two times before a first serve and only once before a second serve.
