With that mantra playing in her mind, Lisa phoned Bella the second she got home from work. Although she liked to think she could live on sex alone, she doubted a relationship could survive without more.

“Hello?” There was a smile in Bella’s voice.

“Hi.” Lisa wandered into the living room.

“I knew it would be you. I saw you arrive home.”

“Are you watching me, Bella McBride?” Lisa loved teasing her.

“Maybe.”

“Don’t you think that’s a little bit creepy?”

Bella chuckled. “Isn’t that like the pot calling the kettle black?”

“Moving right along.” Lisa grinned. “I was wondering if you’d like to go on a date this Sunday.” She’d thought about suggesting Saturday, but Lisa didn’t want the day to end with Bella having to race off to host an adult party.

“Tell me more,” Bella said.

“Well, I don’t really do dinner dates. Fancy restaurants and posh shit’s not really my thing.”

“Wow, sounds romantic.” Bella laughed, and Lisa felt like a bumbling idiot. Sex without emotion, no fuss, no fluff, was so much easier.

And less fulfilling, she reminded herself.

“What I was trying to say is, I thought maybe we could do something together.”

“Like go on a date-not-date?”

As infuriating as Bella could be, she was also delightful. “Exactly. We could go on one of the scenic walks through the Manawatu Gorge. Hold hands and that sort of shit.”

Bella chuckled. “And to think you’re better educated than me.”

Lisa had no intention of going down that road, but she could give as good as she got. “I’m probably fitter too.”

“Oh, you think so?” Bella challenged. “You want to try scrubbing floors and cleaning toilets for a living. Now that’s a workout.”

“Good to know you’re fit, because the Tawa Loop track takes about two hours to walk.” Lisa had heard many good things about the track, but she was yet to experience it for herself. “Do you think you can cope?”

“I hope so. But if I can’t, you’ll have to piggyback me.”

Images of Bella’s crotch bumping and grinding against her back sent a tingle of desire racing up Lisa’s spine. “Only if you wear no panties.”

Bella snorted. “Good God, woman. I don’t want to get arrested.”

“Fine, we’ll save the handcuffs until we get home.” Lisa was only half-joking about the restraints. She intended to make sure they were both shattered by the time the day was out.

“How can I say no to that?” Bella asked.

“The date-not-date or the restraints?”

“All of it. I told you, Lisa, I want it all.”

“Me too,” Lisa said, feeling a vulnerability that terrified her.
