TYING IT TOGETHER

In every successful gathering space, there is that ineffable something that brings the disparate parts into a unified theme. Of course, your naturally sparkling personality will set the ambience, but don’t turn down a little help from your houseplant. What better plant to tie it all together than the climbing plant, literally twining and binding furniture and foliage in a cohesive greenery.

Passionflower: This vine runs rampant, a glory of green leaves and delicate, twisting stems—if you’re lucky, it will flower, too. Its flowers are usually white and purple, arranged in a series of petals and sepals that are said to symbolize the Passion of Christ (hence its name). Whatever its religious significance, be ready with a climbing apparatus (a trellis? a curtain rod? a piece of furniture that can get viney?), because it grows fast and furious. Outdoors, it can grow so rapidly that some regions have labeled it an invasive species, but you can keep an eye on the invader successfully inside. Be ruthless in your pruning. Show that vine who’s boss.

Passionflower vines of different varieties produce different colors of blooms: purple, white, blue, or red. Some types even grow an edible fruit! Lots of sunlight, lots of water, rich soil, and regular fertilizing will encourage it to bloom in the summer months.
