“This is so much. I don’t know what to say but thank you. Thank all of you,” Shannon said as she sat on the couch and opened the last gift.

Adam stood in the back of the room watching her face light up each time she opened a gift. His mom and sister had outdone themselves and he was so grateful. He’d never forget Shannon’s face when they stepped into the house with blue balloons and streamers everywhere you turned. Not only was the entire family there, but neighbors and friends from church. It felt like the whole town was there, except Mike’s mother Patty. Adam’s mother tried to reach out to her, but it was no use. Now that Shannon had a home for the baby, and the support of the Brodys, Patty dropped the threats of suing for custody. According to his sister, once word got out about what she was trying to do to her own daughter-in-law, the town started to turn on her and rallied around Shannon. Adam couldn’t help but still feel somewhat bad for Patty, who was letting her grief stand in the way of being a part of her grandson’s life. He hoped that one day she might come to her senses. Mike would have wanted that.

Everyone was very generous and now Shannon had everything she needed and even some things she wouldn’t need until later. When she opened the gift from his nana, Adam saw the tears in her eyes as she stared down at the homemade quilt. She was so touched that she got up and walked over to his nana to hug her right then. It was such a tender moment that Adam actually felt his eyes begin to water.

After the games were done and all the gifts were open, Shannon finally came up to him, all smiles.

“Family BBQ huh?”

“I knew nothing.” He lied with a huge smile on his face.

“Uh huh. Sure, you didn’t.”

“Thank you.” She reached up and gave him a quick peck on the lips.

“You’re welcome,” he said, stunned by her kiss.

“Do you want me to help you load all of this up?” She touched his hand to hold it.

“No. Us guys got it. Just go and enjoy some time with the ladies.”

She walked away, but Adam felt her resistance to let go of his hand. Was he finally making progress? He wondered.
