Bliss leadership

Claudia Hammond (2005), in her book Emotional Rollercoaster: A journey through the science of feelings, mentions that happiness is usually at the top of the list when people are asked to name emotions, and that it exists in almost all known models of core emotions (often referred to as joy by scientists in order to capture more clearly its momentary expression). Based on this observation, it is remarkable that psychology and neuroscience were preoccupied for so long with our mind’s problems and not with its positive side. This is probably another proof of our brain’s negativity bias, as mentioned earlier. It was only in 1998 that the then incoming president of the prominent American Psychological Association (APA) Martin Seligman announced that psychology had to focus more on the positive side of our mind and called for his term’s focus to be positive psychology (Wallis, 2005). It was about time that scientists’ obsession with negativity gave way to a more balanced approach that included all those elements that make our mind thrive, not only those that make us mentally ill.
