Okay, I have to admit that I totally anticipated the experience at Yum’s to go poorly between me and Walt. After all, we did start out as antagonistic rivals for the attention of Kendra. However, that was before I had come to accept that a hot and popular upperclassman was not going to have goo-goo eyes for me. It was also before the conversation we had at the coffee shop, where Walt and I came to realize that we were pretty much kindred spirits.

“So, your internship puts you in charge of that Egyptian exhibit at the museum?” I queried to Walt across the table where the three of us sat devouring burgers and sipping cocoa.

“The one dedicated to King Nebka the pharaoh, yeah,” Walt replied. “Are you into Egyptology, Mike?”

“I’m into a lot of interesting things of that sort,” I noted.

Walt looked at me quizzically as he sipped his cinnamon-laced chocolate drink. “‘Of that sort?’ Elaborate, maybe?”

“Anything to do with… the unusual,” I responded. “Things from outside of everyday common knowledge and understanding: the occult, UFOs, magick, ESP, etc. All of that shit.”

“Very interesting,” Walt decided with a grin. “Are you familiar with the alleged Egyptian knowledge of acoustics for engineering purposes and their technique of tethering one’s consciousness to the material plane after the physical body had expired?”

“I’ve read some material on that,” I answered. “Egypt was a really cool civilization. There are many known societies in the past that developed all sorts of interesting knowledge that is lost or considered to be just fantasy now. As an example…”

“Um, guys,” Kendra suddenly interjected as she buried her face in her hands. “I’m still not feeling so good after what happened to Edwin. I figured we could talk about that.”

Walt and I took the hint, along with remembering the real reason we were supposed to be at the coffee shop with her.

“Aww, I’m sorry, Kendra,” I said with sincerity. “We just got caught up in things.”

“Yes,” Walt agreed while putting his right hand on Kendra’s shoulder. “I’m sorry, too. I really am concerned, and I’m here for you.”

She flinched to shrug Walt’s hand off her.

Geez. Poor dude, I thought. But I have to admit that I feel even worse for Kendra, and for more than just having to deal with Walt’s unreciprocated interest.

“Look, Kendra, what happened to Edwin wasn’t your fault,” I said.

“Of course, it wasn’t,” Walt added. “It was Edwin’s own fault. With his behavior, he obviously hurt and pissed off one too many people.”

Kendra took her hands off her sobbing face and looked directly at Walt. Her light brown eyes, though swollen red from crying, did nothing to take away from her pretty features. The tone that came out of her mouth next was anything but pretty, though.

“Walt!” she exclaimed. “What the fuck’s the matter with you? He was murdered!”

Walt seemed to be taken aback by her outburst. Me, I was more taken aback by the fact that he was taken aback in the first place, if that made sense.
