EPILOGUES

Within the hour a reporter from Eyewitness News was interviewing Lamar and Everett on the street where the battle had taken place. The former was standing with his broken wrist bandaged up. The more seriously but not fatally injured older man was laying on a wheeled stretcher, the terrible wounds on two limbs and the front of his chest wrapped in bandages, as he awaited the EMTs on the scene to bring him to an ambulance following the interview he agreed to give.

“So, Officer Middleton, do you think the threat to the city presented by this pack of feral dogs is over now?” Kathleen Evans asked.

“I can’t say for certain,” Lamar replied, “but I think so. We got the pack leader, so I believe it’s likely that this is over. We are, of course, going to request 24-hour patrols over the next few weeks just to make certain.”

“Okay, good,” Kathleen said. “You seem to have sustained an injury to your wrist, as it’s swathed in bloody bandages. Are you all right?”

“The EMTs wouldn’t have let me stay on the scene for this interview if it was life-threatening. I’ll get it fully treated right after this.”

“And your partner, Renny McClaine?” she continued. “We heard he was one of the surviving officers but was very seriously injured.”

“His injuries were much more severe than mine, yes. But if I know Renny, he’ll pull through just fine. I was lucky to have him at my side today. The man is a true hero.”

Kathleen smiled. “Yes, it seems you men with the badges are all true heroes.”

“Thank you, Kathleen, though a badge isn’t required to make a hero, as Everett proved today.”

“The wolf man is a hero too!” Everett interjected.

“Excuse me, Mr. …?” the reporter said as she shifted the mic over to the face of the new speaker.

Lamar sighed noticeably.

“Everett Williams here. I gotta say that while the cops shot down the Jack Dog in the end, the wolf man helped with the whole thing and even went one-on-one with it for a while. He saved my life. I know reports say he’s been attacking folks, but I don’t think he’s all bad. Not totally. He might just have some issues with some folks. We don’t know all there is to know about him yet.”

“Oh, really?” Kathleen replied before turning back to Lamar. “Officer, did you see this reputed wolf man on the scene?”

“Is she sayin’ I might be a liar?” Everett queried with annoyance.

“No, no, Everett,” Lamar stated firmly. “Calm down there. I think Kathleen is just wondering if I agree that what we saw was really a werewolf. And I can’t really say that it was.”

“It done looked like a werewolf to me, man!” Everett insisted.

“And you have seen enough werewolves in your time to know one when you see one, Mr. Williams?” Kathleen asked with a smirk.

“I done saw me enough movies to know one when I see one!” Everett spat back. “And I don’t think he’s all bad.”

“Okay, gentlemen, that’s enough for now,” Kathleen said to end the interview.
