I drink as much water as I can. I don’t know how far we are out of the city, or how long it will be until my next drink. Grabbing my clothes, I get dressed, watching as the sun casts orange and yellows into the sky. Opening the door, I go to walk the way Beau led me yesterday, but my feet won’t work. “Damn you.”

I turn, looking at each door when a small thin staircase appears. I know he’s up there. Some sixth sense tells me. I follow the curve to the third floor, and I’m met by two black carved doors.

Holding the door, so it doesn’t squeak, I pull the handle down, holding my breath as I push it open. I only let my breath escape when no noise follows.

Pushing it open slightly, my eyes find him immediately. He’s lying on his side with his top off. From where I’m standing, I can see how lean he is. There’s not an inch of fat on his body. He’s just pure muscle. My eyes move to his chest before shifting upwards to the mane of blonde hair around him. His massive structure and his muscular body give him an intimidating look even in his sleep. I take one last look at the boy I loved and died, and now the man in his place. How did we get to this? How did he turn his back on his family?

Closing the door slowly, I turn and jump to see Mateo watching me.

“I left him alive,” I sneer as I walk past. I don’t wait for a reply as I jog down the stairs, sensing the guards but knowing they are hiding.

I jog to the front door, and as soon as I step over the threshold, I take in a lungful of air, feeling the sun warm my skin. The suffocating feeling is still there as I walk down the steps, my hand on my knife. As I make my way across the forecourt to the drive, I take it all in. The building looks bigger than it did last night, more obtrusive, more ostentatious.

I don’t breathe easily until I slip out the gates. My mind is still swirling. Beau is alive. Has he been here all these years? Why did everyone think he was dead? Whose body was in that coffin? I’m left with more questions than answers.

A noise catches my attention, and I turn to see the man himself prowling towards me, his black jeans slung tantalizingly low on his hips, his chest bare and sun kissed, and his hair hanging to his shoulders.

We both stop, staring at each other like wild animals before a fight.

His eyes narrow. I turn and, without thought, I run. I can hear his heavy footfalls behind me. I pick up my pace, even though my legs scream, and my chest tightens. Two thick arms circle my waist, and I’m yanked off my feet. He takes me down to the ground, turning just in time to take our weight and break the fall.
