Nepalis are easy-going with a ready sense of humor that tends to be quite slapstick. Foreigners may find it lacking in subtlety. Generally, few Nepalis will appreciate irony or black comedy. They take themselves quite seriously and will criticize themselves, but rightly and understandably do not take kindly to being poked fun at (self-ridicule is fine). Non-Nepali or Western caricatures depicting politicians are seen as disrespectful and tactless. Nepalis will not tolerate even light-hearted disrespect toward older members of the family; this is expected of non-Nepalis and Westerners in relation to officers and leaders of political parties, too.
