Jane wept beneath her mask. “Why didn’t they tell us?”

The girl sat on the back of the mule. Her grandfather walked beside her. Their cart rattled along behind them.

“Oracle bones?” the girl asked.

“The king took the lower shell of a turtle,” her grandfather explained, “scorched it with hot pokers, and divined the future by interpreting the crackles in the shell.”

“I bet the turtle wasn’t too happy,” the girl said.

“I imagine not.”

“Do people still do that today?”

Her grandfather shook his head. “We do not have kings any longer.”

“I know. But other people. Do they read the oracle bones?”

“If they did, I think the red dreams would’ve stopped.”

They walked in silence for a while before the girl asked, “Are we going to die?”

Her grandfather hesitated to answer.

“Of course,” he finally said. “And maybe sooner than we might wish.”

The girl nodded, as strongly and wisely and courageously as she could.

“I am not afraid, grandfather.”

“I will try not to be, as well.”
