Chapter 12
Sheâd come to the same conclusion he had. Ever since heâd talked to the lab, heâd tried to wrap his mind around what it could mean, grasping at anything that didnât lead back to the idea that somehow Jack the Ripper was trying to make his way back into the world. What he didnât know, and that he needed to tell Rachel, was that he wasnât just a DSI with Scotland Yard. The Ripper would be facing off with a group of men who understood paranormal phenomenon better than most, as they themselves were of supernatural origin.
Heâd wondered how he would ever come up with a way to introduce her to the idea of who and what he was. It seemed the time had come. Would he have the courage to tell her? What if she didnât believe him? What if she did? Would finding herself involved with a man not born of this world terrify her the way the malevolent apparition did?
âWhat was it my fictional ancestor was supposed to have said? When youâve eliminated the impossible, youâre left with the improbable as the truth. I donât want to think thatâs true, butâ¦â
âIt would explain why he was never heard from again after Mary Kellyâs death.â
âDidnât they try to pin other murders on him?â
Rachel nodded. âYes, both in Europe and in America. But if we accept that the Ripper is in some form back among us, how did it happen? Will he start killing again? How do we send him back and make sure he never escapes again?â
âUnknown. For me, the second question is the most pressing and has a follow-upâare you his intended first victim?â
âOne of the things they believe about the Ripper is that he hated women. And that thing, if it is the Ripper, did call me a whore last night.â
âIt did. I donât like the fact that it seems to have attached itself to you, but the question is why you?â
âI have no idea. It doesnât help that there is very little known about the Ripper or most of his victims. We know more about them in death than we do of their lives, especially Mary Kelly.â
âYes. Her life seems fairly tragic.â
âI think a lot of women led fairly tragic lives back then. One thing all the accounts say was that she was a nice woman. There are stories that she offered a safe sleeping place to other prostitutes who couldnât even afford a shabby room. If we assume the Ripper has come back from the dead, how did he do it? Where was he all this time?â
And there it was againâthe proverbial elephant in the room. Although he hadnât come back from the dead, he knew more about piercing the veil and coming through than most people. He and Felix had always felt like they stumbled through. They had not been fully sentient until theyâd found themselves outside the pages of Sageâs books. Actually, it was Roark who knew the most, as he had come through the veil in order to save Sage.
