Chapter Twenty-Three

Karl didn’t expect to be standing with Zaena in Amanda Morton’s office, but less than an hour after returning to their house, he received a call from Morton’s receptionist to set up an appointment. After a brief discussion about whether meeting Morton instead of raiding her building was a good idea, they settled on the former. Everyone was comfortable with fewer bullets and explosions.

Of all the humans they’d dealt with, Amanda Morton more than anyone understood Zaena’s abilities. Inviting the elf to her company’s headquarters and ambushing her would guarantee massive collateral damage and millions of dollars in damage, at a minimum.

That didn’t mean they trusted her. Karl brought his gun and was surprised her security didn’t make him surrender it.

Morton sat at her desk in a crisp white suit, artfully perfect red curls framing her face. Her amused expression irritated Karl, but he wasn’t ready to go to war with the billionaire unless necessary. Money was its own type of magic.

“Good morning,” Morton greeted them with a sweep of her hand toward two comfortable chairs in front of her desk. “And thank you for joining me. I thought it best to not delay, given we have some matters to discuss.”

Zaena sat first, nodding at Karl. He took a seat and folded his arms, not bothering to hide his scowl.

“Before we go any farther,” Karl began, “you might want to reconsider who you hire for your side jobs.”

“You’re not the first person to tell me that this morning,” Morton replied with a smile. “I paid the relevant men full price for the contract despite their technically not completing it, and my people made it clear those men should remain scarce for a while. I could bury them in so many lawsuits they’d never see the light of day or set law enforcement on them. I’m sure if I tried hard enough, I’d find they did something they shouldn’t.”

“You shouldn’t work with dishonorable men,” Zaena insisted.

“It’s a noble idea,” Morton offered, “but not always practical in the real world if you want to get anything done.” She added, “But I don’t knowingly support heinous acts.”

Zaena folded her arms, copying Karl, and glared at the CEO. “We demand to know what is going on.”

“Demand?” Morton’s brows lifted. “Those are strong words, especially given where you are and who you’re talking to. I’m a strong woman, Zaena. I’m not easy to push around.”

“I’m a stronger woman,” Zaena replied and narrowed her eyes. “I thought we were allies, or at least not enemies, but you’re employing dangerous men who threaten innocents and manipulate this city. That makes me question my tolerance of you.”

A flash of irritation passed over Morton’s face before resignation replaced it. “Understood. First of all, let me say I’m sorry for what happened. I should have provided more specific parameters for the job. It would have cut down on the unpleasantness that transpired.”

“Did they tell you everything?” Karl asked. “What exactly did they say happened?”

“I know everything relevant,” she replied.
