I could tell during the rest of his training with the soldiers that he wanted to end things early. Unfortunately, Silas came out and added a few things he needed Marcellus to work on. When he was finally finished, he needed to get cleaned up before doing anything else.

My impatience causes me to pace back and forth in my chambers, even though I know it won’t be too awfully long for him to get ready. It’s so late in the day that we’ll have to join Silas for dinner before we’re able to enjoy any alone time together. Oh well, hopefully, we won’t be here much longer. I know I planned to ask Marcellus tonight if we could leave, but after spending so much time waiting on him, I realized it’s a better idea to wait until he trusts me a bit more.

A light knock sounds on my door and I rush to open it, excited to spend time with Marcellus even if his uncle will be there as well. I’m filled with disappointment upon seeing who’s on the other side though. Standing there is Silas with a smile on his face that doesn’t quite reach his eyes. The muscles in my body tense with the flood of protection magic released, ready to dispatch at the slightest thought.

Even my magic has developed a mistrust toward this man. “Lord Silas,” I greet him, unable to force a smile. Not the most polite greeting but the best he’ll get from me. I peer down the hall toward Marcellus’ room, willing him to come out so he can act as a buffer between Silas and me. While I’m capable of protecting myself, and my guards are right here, I’d still prefer him to be here with me.

“Your Highness, I came to offer you an escort to dinner this evening.” Ugh, yuck. Why? Is he dense?

“I thank you for the offer, Lord Silas, however, I’ve already made plans with Marcellus to escort me. He should be arriving momentarily.” Be gone, you annoying pest of a man! I strain my ears to catch any sound of Marcellus.

“Oh, I’m sure he won’t mind if his uncle swoops in to steal some of your time since he isn’t ready yet. Come along, we can wait for him in the dining hall.” He shifts his body to the side holding out his arm expectantly. Overly presumptuous men make me seethe. With narrowed eyes upon him, I think through what I want to say.

Unable to come up with an excuse that isn’t obvious, I decide the best course of action is to accept his offer. I don't know what he’s up to, but I don’t want him knowing my intentions too soon. “Well, if you’re sure, I suppose he can find us in the dining room.” I reluctantly place my arm in his, being careful to make as little contact as possible, and shut my door behind me.

Both Baxter and Frances walk behind me as we make our way along the hall and turn to head down the stairwell, which is when I hear Marcellus’ door open.
