Chapter 19

They spent a couple of hours at the Harrisons, comforting Stan and Kevin, helping with funeral arrangements and taking incoming calls.

Constable Creeson called. The detectives were on their way to Storm Haven Manor to question everyone. They had conducted a number of interviews, but so far, they had nothing more than they already knew: Jenny had been tending the bar for the first set. She’d danced with a few people during the second, including Lyall, Gavin, Billy and Phil, after which she was seen hanging with her friends. When The Sidhe had played, everyone was too focused on the band to remember where Jenny had been. The police surmised that the assault and murder occurred after The Sidhe had taken the stage.

Lexi shuddered to think that while she’d been having the time of her life, Jenny was being raped and murdered. It mirrored too closely to the night Cat had been kidnapped.

She stared out the windscreen of the car as they drove back to Storm Haven. The world had been washed clean by the recent storm, wind ruffling the tufts of grass. The leaves and branches of the gum trees and golden wattle lining the road wove in a mad dance. But she barely noticed them, her attention on Daemon, silent and too close in the confines of the car. How could she be so aware of him when her mind was so full of the tragedy that had occurred?

It was probably wrong to feel this way in the shadow of such violence. And yet, she couldn’t be sorry for it.

She glanced at him again as he drove, her gaze roaming over his strong profile. Just looking at him chased the cold and shakes away and made her feel things she’d never felt before. She’d watched him at the Harrisons. He’d managed to ensure the attention remained on the Harrisons in their time of grief and not on him. He’d talked music with Kevin, not talking down to him as other men did. Kevin had actually smiled as he’d shown Daemon his guitar. Daemon had listened to the young boy play and then played one of his songs that Kevin said Jenny loved. Tears and smiles were on everyone’s faces as they listened, Kevin singing along in his boy’s treble.

Was this the same man she had thought of as arrogant and egotistical? This man had been well hidden by the public persona. She was coming to trust this man. Was a breath away from falling deeply in love with him.

No. That was impossible. It’s just … he wasn’t what she’d expected.

She stared at the road ahead. Too soon they turned into the drive leading through the paddocks towards the house.

Daemon drove past the house and around to the vine-covered cottage. He stopped in front of the gate. ‘Here we go.’

Bev leaned forward. ‘Thank you, Daemon.’ She touched Lexi’s shoulder. ‘I’ll be up in a little while to start dinner.’

‘No. You rest. I’ll take care of it.’

‘Are you sure, dear? I know you’re tired too.
