Tug sat in his cart and rubbed his chin as he looked at the burning monastery. There were screams and occasional flashes of light from the blocky building behind the actual temple. Looking behind him, he wondered how much time he had. Surely the crazed old monk couldn’t have run the entire way from the town.

“What the hell?” Ted exclaimed upon seeing the old mint farmer.

“Indeed,” Tug said, looking down at Ted as Nancy came out of the dormitory behind him. “Honestly I didn’t think you were up to any good when I left you here earlier. But it’s only been a few hours and you managed to commit a miniature genocide. I'm not sure if I should be appalled or impressed.”

“Who’s he?” Nancy asked, “and why isn’t he screaming and running from us?”

“Nancy, this is Tug. Tug, Nancy.”

“Pleasure to meet you, young lady,” Tug said.

“I’m not sure why he’s ok with us,” Ted said. “I’m guessing he’s done his fair share of dark magic.”

Tug’s lips quirked in a slight grin. “You’re more insightful than I gave you credit for,” he said. “But that’s for another time. Remember that barrel of mint oil?” he asked.

“Yeah,” Ted said. “I paid you for it and told you not to sell it.”

“Yeah well, I should have listened.”

“Someone was able to tell it was tainted?” Ted asked.

“Worse than that. I sold a gallon to a small shrine keeper in town. Wouldn’t you know, as soon as he put the oil in a burner every light in the place winked out like that?” he said, snapping his fingers. “I’ve seen a lot of spooky shit in my days, but nothing like that… and I’ve seen ritual necromancy.”

“That’s how they killed me!” Nancy said, tugging at her dress to show the top of the inch thick scar that ran down her chest.

“Really now?” Tug said, peering at the incision for a second. He rubbed his chin in thought again before speaking. “So, if both of you are dead, how is that a scar? I’m no medico, but scarring happens during the healing process and you are so dead you can’t get drunk,” he said, pointing at Ted.

“Yeah,” Ted agreed. “Well apparently if we touch pure chaos magic, we can heal.”

“Healing that leaves a scar would mean the healing isn’t too different from what living people go through, just much faster,” Nancy said before persing her lips as she examined the scar.

“How do you know so much about this?” Ted asked in frustration. “Tell me honestly are you a necromancer?”

“Tell me that yourself,” Tug said. “You said you could see the dark spark in Nancy, can you see it in me?”

Ted thought about his answer and examined Tug again before saying, “No.”

“Well, there you go. I’ve just been around the block a few times. I know things.”

“That potion you gave me in town. It wasn’t just perfume,” Ted said.

“Perhaps.”

“Is there alchemy on Komar?” Ted asked.

“Alchemy?” Nancy asked. “That’s fairy tale stuff.”

Ted laughed a full belly laugh. “Are you serious?” he asked.
