February 17
February 14 will henceforth be known as Saint Jeanetteâs Day. Fresh from having issued a 250-page public shaming of her adoptive mother, Jeanette Winterson is âoptimistic about love againâ:
love in every shape and size and disguise. Known love, new love, loveâs ghosts, loveâs hopes⦠. Love is an ecosystem. You canât neglect it, exploit it, pollute it, and wonder what happened to the birds and the bees.
With money âgoneâââit was an illusionââthere is an opportunity to âre-think love.â
Once a child preacher in Accrington, Lancashire, Jeanette has never ceased quoting from the Book of Jeanette. No other contemporary writer would get away with itâimagine Julian Barnes instructing us to âre-think loveââbut for some reason she does. The Guardian gave up its front page on February 14, for Jeanette to say, âhug those who love usâand give some hugs to those who donât get loved enough.â And to say it again: âLove your loved ones. Love the stranger.â
There was something for every member of the flock. If âlove is an ecosystemâ has you re-thinking just that bit too much, try âThere are so many different kinds of love,â or âLove is an alternative currency.â Or, indeed, âChildren need so much love.â Teenagers were not forgotten. âThey need to see that love can change and deepen.â Think about it, then re-think about it. Money is an illusion, but âlove isnât a commodity.â
âWe all had a fantasy that love could take care of itself.â We did, didnât we all? Now letâs make the planet âa place we can call home.â Love your loved ones. (Saint Jeanette didnât re-think that one through.) The piece will remain on the website until April 1, when the Guardian will take it down.
