The Haves and Have-Nots: Class Structure in the United States

In the United States, social class is a complicated thing. It is not just the amount of money someone has, although that is certainly part of it. There are typically three tiers that are relevant when defining social class: the upper class, middle class, and lower class. There is a great deal of disparity between these classes, with the richest 1 percent of Americans owning 40 percent of the country’s wealth.2 The fundamental difference between the social classes is the kind of work they do and how that work is perceived. Class correlates to one’s educational attainment, occupation, and social networks. It also corresponds to one’s political power and voice in society. Each class has its own social norms and values, which make moving between classes a difficult feat to accomplish. Examining class in the United States reveals a lot about the way power and privilege work in society.
