I sprang from cover the moment Connor snatched the pendant from his adopted mother. Annabeth ran invisible beside me. The grasses whipped about my arms and legs as I ran, blown by the powerful wind that swept down towards the trees.

Mrs. MacEachern rose into the air, her hair swirling about her as she shouted in fury.

Connor slammed into Mr. MacEachern. The spell maintaining his invisibility failed, and he appeared as a snarling beast grappling with the Vodnik. His claws tore harmlessly at Mr. MacEachern's dead-gray skin.

“This is pointless, son,” the Vodnik said, his voice hoarse.

Water exploded and threw Connor back. My mate landed in a crouch, his right, furry hand clutched tight, holding onto the pendant and Nadra. I raced faster as Mr. MacEachern strolled towards Connor, water gathering around his bloated hand.

I leaped and landed on his back, my teeth biting at his neck. My teeth sank in, but it was like gnawing on tough rubber. The flesh gave away but wouldn't tear. My claws tried to rip his flesh open as I clung to his back.

“Dammit,” he growled and threw me off.

The wind howled. Annabeth's gun fired, forcing Mrs. MacEachern to use the air as a shield around her. Mr. MacEachern struggled beneath me, trying to throw me off. I held on tight, biting harder. I wanted to tear his—

The Vodnik's elbow crashed into my face. I was thrown off and landed in a hard heap on the ground. I whimpered. The world spun around me. My legs kicked as I struggled to right myself. Connor howled and leaped again as the Vodnik stood over me.

I gained my feet just as Mr. MacEachern kicked and—

Darkness fell on me.
