Graham

I wake up on the couch.

“Ow!” I go right away, reaching for my neck. “Fuck!”

I must have slept wrong for I have an agonizing kink in my neck. A helluva way to start the day…after a helluva night with Mattie.

I sigh and head to the bathroom, get the shower going, start my day. I pick out an old suit from the overflow we put in the guest bedroom. Mattie doesn’t stir from our bedroom. I have just a cup of coffee for breakfast and then head to work.

Once there, my mood doesn’t improve. It’s pretty clear from the get-go that I’m the laughing stock of the firm now. Is there anyone that doesn’t know my Mattie is fucking, well… everyone?!?

It’s fucking embarrassing. The sideways looks I get from people standing at the water cooler. The chuckles that accompany my passing by the breakroom. Even some pointing. They’re not even trying to be secretive about it! They want to be as obvious as possible, to embarrass me the most.

Well, fuck them! Pretty soon I’m going to be partner here!

My phone rings.

“Yeah?”

“Graham.”

It’s Sherry. My anxiety lessens a bit. “Hi, baby.”

“Graham, Mr. Milford wants to see you in his office right away.”

Hm, this must be about the promotion. It’s about time. Finally, some good news for the day!

“I’ll be right there,” I say, hanging up.

Milford wants me…right away. My heart skips a beat. The promotion is coming through faster than I thought. Talk about turning the shit situation of the past day right around! I’m on fucking Cloud-9!

I grab the file I’ve been keeping on ways the firm can improve and quickly leave my office, head out to the main floor. If anyone’s looking and pointing and chuckling at me now, I don’t notice. There’s a skip in my step as I head toward Milford’s office. Sherry looks up at me as I approach, gives me a smile, and then I’m knocking and heading in.

“Mr. Milford,” I say as I enter his office. He motions for me to sit down.

“Graham,” Milford says as I do so, “we have to have a serious talk.”

“Sir, when it comes to being a partner, I just want you to know…I’m totally committed to this firm, its future, and its continued success.”

“That’s good to hear, Graham” he says, leaning back in his chair, “but I’m afraid there’s been a bit of a change.”

“A…change, sir?”

“Yep. Talking it over with the other partners, well…we’re not sure you’re exactly ownership material.”

Not owner…what is he trying to say? “Sir?”

“The promotion to partner is off the table, I’m afraid.”

I sit there, staring at him with a dumbfounded look on my face.

“I really am sorry, Graham,” he says to me, “but things have really been kinda…whacky…around here lately.”

“Whacky, sir?”

“Well, it’s your wife, mostly. Graham…she’s fucking everybody!”

“Sir, I assure you that she won’t be my wife much longer. In fact, she’s–”

“Already has the divorce papers, I know…I know.” He leans forward then, puts his elbows on the desk as he folds his hands in front of him.
