Part 7: Timeout

This section of the book will be the most challenging for some readers because the concept of time seems intrinsic to us as human beings.

In order to deconstruct Time, we have to understand its origins. Going way back into prehistory, the most basic and useful observation of time was likely the “day” cycle. Knowing predators ruled the night, because they still do, the earliest humans probably revered the light of day enough to note its beginning and end.

Over time, larger cycles such as seasons were observed and when these were strung together years were observed.

Other than observation being unreliable, the problem with these observations is they are all arbitrary assignments (labels) and, being dependent upon the rotation and/or tilt of the Earth, these observations are highly subjective to the Earth. For example, the lengths of days, seasons and years on Mars are different than what are observed on the Earth. Therefore, inferring from these observations alone, we can only conclude time must be different on Mars.

We can also infer that, if we journey off into space, then we wouldn’t observe any time at all. Is it day because we are closer to one star than the rest of the stars or is it night because all of the stars are shining?

Timekeeping (not to be confused with the measurement of time) goes back as far as 2000 BCE when ancient Egyptians used obelisks and their shadows as rudimentary sundials. However, there is a very big difference between timekeeping and the measurement of time. The major differences being timekeeping is arbitrary and subjective. Putting aside a multitude of outrageous claims made within the theoretical physics community (i.e., QM) that impede the progress of knowledge, in order for time to be a dimension it must be consistent and objective – just like 3D space. Time must also be infinite but measureable.

Clocks (water, mechanical, digital or optical) do not measure time. They keep time and are based entirely upon the same arbitrary and subjective observations previously mentioned. If a clock were to measure time, then time would have to flow from the multiverse through the clock, get parsed, be measured and then extruded back out into the multiverse. This process is not what a clock does.

A clock, any clock, is a device that is designed and manufactured to operate within specific parameters and tolerances. Just like a toaster. What are these parameters? A clock converts an input into an output. Energy (mechanical, electrical etc.) is converted into a “tic”. The tic is then displayed in the appropriate format. A toaster heats bread. Neither a clock nor a toaster measures time.

A clock’s tolerances are simply a measurement of accuracy. The most accurate clocks, optical clocks, are accurate to a femtosecond (one quadrillionth of a second). To be clear, a measure of accuracy is not a measurement of time. And the femtosecond is still based upon the same arbitrary and subjective observations of “time” mentioned above. For the record (and for whatever it may be worth), the accuracy of a femtosecond on Mars is one quadrillionth of a Martian second.
