Some of the mood I was trying to create got captured, but I was spending so much time on balancing the story and making sure the structure was working that I forgot to be interesting. I was realizing that although the habits I'd learned about sequence were important, that I was going to have to unlearn it in some ways. Or I'd keep writing 'meh' stories.

I had a note on my desk that said 'what's the fucking point?' and after this I then added a post it that said 'be interesting!'

It was humid. It was dark. The Hanimar were out on patrol. Jim Spallinger leaned against an old fir and looked up at the stars. A nest-like collection of tiny lights drifted between him and the Big Dipper, moving slowly across the sky towards the East.
