On Blogging

Blogging took off in the 1990s. Its impact is explicable in terms of its continuities with already existing journaling and diaristic practice, and through its facilitation of easy publishing due to its being web-based. Clearly any literate person has the skill necessary to keep a diary/journal, and people have been doing so for centuries. The personal journal on paper was private: those of us who kept one will recall our anxiety/horror at the prospect of another person reading it without our consent. We construct a sense of who we were and are through reflection on the entries in our personal journal. Journaling is in this case a private and introspective affair. Blogging shares with the keeping of a journal the formal property of being organised into dated entries, but is different in that the blogger has an audience in mind. I would treat the private blog as a digital version of the personal diary/journal, as it is part of the character of blogging that there is at least one other reader apart from the author. Comparing the personal journal to the blog is akin to comparing private retrospection to public retrospection. The blogger constructs a storied self in public, and readers’ comments become part of the retrospection on the contents of the posted entries. For many bloggers, their blogs are a means whereby they can be themselves in public; many bloggers see their blogs as a textual public version of themselves (Reed, 2005). Technology has moved on since the early days of blogging, leading data scientist Stephen Wolfram to reflect on ‘life analytics’ (http://blog.stephenwolfram.com/2012/03/the-personal-analytics-of-my-life/). Wearable technology now offers new possibilities for digital recording of a person's entire audio-visual environment. This is an area to watch.
