Chapter Ten

Celestia

“Looking for someone?” Jaxyten’s breath brushed against the back of my neck and ear, raising goosebumps.

“Maybe.” I trailed a finger over the soft cotton of his uniform jacket that covered his arm.

“So were we.” Kairo appeared on my other side, and I swore his lips brushed my skin, sending a little shiver. I waited to feel the energy drain, but like the day before, there wasn’t any. Was something wrong with me? Had they somehow done something, possibly a spell, to me? Since the asshole bully, only Jaxyten and Kairo had touched me. I’d need someone else to intentionally touch me, the problem was that so far, no one other than Baiji and Amoria were willing to come within a foot of me. If I hadn’t already made a name for myself yesterday with my ambassadorial dress and the manacles, they all knew now. Throughout the morning, I’d heard whispers about me being a siren.

“Well, let’s grab our food and go find some seats. This place gets crazy at lunch.”

“And some of them, you want to stay away from or else you might be their lunch.”

“And a tasty one at that.”

Their back and forth in my ear had my head spinning and my nerve endings alive like I’d been stung by an electric eel. The electricity that rippled between the three of us was palpable, drawing curious glances from those around us.

Without another word—not that I’d said much already—I filled my tray with food. No, that wasn’t exactly correct. I placed a few dishes on my tray and watched as Jaxyten and Kairo continued to add to those on my tray as well as onto theirs.

The table I’d sat at the evening before contained only three other students spread out so that none of them could touch another one. Good. There would be space for us since everyone seated at the mermaid tables appeared to widen in size, filling the tables the moment I appeared beside them. Only Baiji and Amoria offered me an uncomfortable shrug while Miriam and her cronies smirked. Not that it mattered anyways since I planned on eating with my two elementals. My? Where the fuck did that come from?

Just when I filled my mouth with some rubbery version of octopus, Jaxyten spoke, “So how was your morning? Anything exciting happen?”

My cheeks burned from embarrassment as I attempted to chew and swallow the piece of rubber they called food, but every time I swallowed, it felt like the piece grew back again.

“Of course, something exciting happened. She found us.” Kairo winked and I laughed, choking on that blasted piece of inedible food.

Jaxyten rubbed circles on my back as I continued to cough, trying to get the one piece that slid partway down my throat to either come up or go down. Kairo held up a glass of juice and some napkins. It was the napkins I snatched, holding them to my mouth as tears ran down my face. Even when Jaxyten switched from rubbing to pounding, it didn’t dislodge.
