Ian sat on the bench in the back of a parked panel van, his legs propped up on a medical aid bag as he impatiently checked his watch.

Worthy called back from the driver’s seat, “How much longer do you think this is going to take?”

Ian rolled his eyes. “How should I know?”

“You’re an intel guy,” Worthy explained. “You should know everything.”

“You do realize that my training and experience has at no time involved date rape drugs, right?”

“Me neither. But it’s been over an hour now. Give him a call and see what’s up.”

Sighing, Ian produced his phone and redialed a number for the third time since Benavidez had taken Isabella’s bait. He placed the call on speaker so Worthy could hear the conversation that Ian was certain would be short and uneventful.

Reilly answered, “What’s up?”

“You tell me,” Ian replied. “We still haven’t heard from Isabella. What do you got?”

“I mean, they’re still drinking. Looks like it’s going well, but I can’t tell if she’s dosed him yet or not. He looks completely normal; they’re both talking up a storm. And I’ve discovered that club soda without alcohol tastes like shit.”

“All right, thanks.”

Reilly ended the call.

Great, Ian thought. He and Worthy were stuck in a van, Reilly was sitting at the bar ogling Colombian women, and David was at the nightclub with zero ability to communicate his progress or lack thereof. The clock was ticking down to getting pulled out of the country for lack of results, and his ability to divine any intelligence value from Benavidez’s connection to Sofia hinged on a ludicrous plan.

Getting Benavidez to sit down for a drink was a critical first step, but there was no telling how long it would take Isabella to slip the scopolamine into his cocktail, if she would at all. There was a very real risk that he’d never look away from his glass, particularly given the prevalence of Devil’s Breath in Colombia, along with a not-unlikely possibility that their femme fatale would cut her losses and bail with her initial payment and new outfit, never to be seen again. And while Reilly was in the bar to keep eyes-on and prevent that latter outcome from occurring, Ian’s read on Isabella was that she was not to be underestimated. If she delivered Benavidez on a silver platter it would be because she’d chosen to, not due to an inability to lose Reilly in the crowded streets.

But as Ian considered which outcome was more likely, Isabella called and removed all doubt.

“Hey,” Ian answered.

He could tell from her voice that she was smiling. For her, this must’ve been something akin to a recreational sport.

“My friend is ready to meet you now.”

Thank God, he thought, hastily responding, “We’re at the planned pickup next to the taqueria, but we can move wherever you need us.”

“No, I will come to you. He is quite…cooperative right now.”

“Are you sure he’s under?”

“I am one hundred percent certain. The time to speak is now. We will see you in a few minutes.
