ALDERFER:
Very interesting. Before leaving this part of our discussion will you explain to us the fact that not only do we need this self-discipline to control our emotions, but we need it especially in the case of a number of items in life that you believe should be put on the âmust controlâ list.
NAPOLEON HILL:
Yes, thatâs right. There are four items that appear on this list, namely, our appetite, that is for food and drink; our mental attitude; the use of our time; and definiteness of purpose, and each one of these requires a great deal of self-discipline.
In the case of the first, food and drink, it is a well-established fact that a great many people donât exercise enough discipline in regard to the amount and kinds of food that they put into their body. After a certain point has been reached, in which the actual needed nourishment is supplied to restore body tissues worn out by our physical and mental effort, additional food only imposes an extra strain upon the organs and accumulates a surplus that builds fatty tissue. Too much fat, especially in middle age and after, tends to reduce oneâs efficiency and to shorten oneâs life. The same thing holds true with drinking. There is a necessity for controlling your desire for strong drinks, otherwise you are inviting disaster and failure.
