Chapter Eight

We learn that the broad man with the near-perfect English is named Ewan. He is their leader. He has the last word, but the woman called Glynis is a trusted advisor and often has say in matters.

Camryn and I have been loaded down with supplies. With my legs still feeling the effects of being buried by debris, I can barely keep up the pace as we move down the tunnel. I force myself to keep going, but fear it is hard on Camryn. Nonetheless, she persists.

A young woman drags a litter with bedding upon which lies an elderly woman. The old woman seems to wake up occasionally, and the young woman tends to her. A big man named Bran frets over them moving too slowly, and he begins yelling at the young woman.

“Warrior,” Ewan says to me. “You bring Nain. Do it gently, for if you harm her, you die. This is not a joke as was the game before.”

I pull the litter with the old woman as gently as I can. I frequently turn to be sure she appears comfortable, but it is hard to know if I am successful since she is rarely conscious.

“Stopiwch,” the young woman says. “Debemos parar.”

“You need to stop, Nadia,” Camryn says to me.

I slow our movement and let the litter come to a stop. The young woman kneels beside the old woman and pulls out a small flask. She tips it gently at the woman’s mouth.

“For the pain,” she tells me. I nod, and she adds, “I am Misha.”

“I am Nadia,” I say. “You speak English.”

“Yes.”

I stare at her eyes, they are some dark color other than brown, but so dark it is hard to tell which. Her face is smudged, her hair matted and dirty. Her hands appear to be the only clean parts of her body.

“Get moving,” Ewan barks.

I readjust my hold on the sides of the litter and begin moving again, ignoring the pain in my leg and back. It is in this manner that we travel down the tunnel for several hours.

We halt when we come upon a blockage in the passageway. We are to take a short rest before clearing the rubble. I find myself seated across the way from Camryn and beside Glynis. Our captors are enjoying some bread and tea, but we are not offered any.

“The old woman is my nain, my grandmother,” Ewan says. “The healer must keep her alive, and you must help in any manner that you can.”

I nod, my gaze moving between the elderly woman and Misha. I notice that Misha is not eating anything either, but is feeding Ewan’s grandmother small pieces of bread soaked in tea.

“We are the Merrick clan,” Glynis says. “We have been hunted and antagonized by so many groups of New Americans that it is no wonder we are distrustful.”

I nod at Glynis, whose English is quite respectable. “I understand,” I say. “I too have been treated inhospitably.” I wonder, too late, if I should not have mentioned my own circumstances.
