Twist in the Wind
The middle of the country was boring to ride through, and the loading, unloading, and weighing took forever in Salt Lake City, but Nevada was horrendous. There was nothing to look at, and Ben and Hudson had said all the words they were probably going to exchange not too far after the latest state-line duty was completed. Hudson had nothing in common with this guy and was loath to talk to him about his life. He didnât give a shit what the asshole did when he wasnât picking up desperate young men and exchanging rides for sexual favors.
Northern California was greener than Hudson expected, but it was nothing compared to Oregon. Oregon was green. A green heâd never seen before. Had to be all the rain heâd heard about. Life was everywhere. There were mountains, streams, trees, wildlife, wildflowers in every direction. Such a different feel than Florida. It was as if heâd landed on a different planet.
They passed Eugene, and the landscape changed again, then skirted Salem. Several more miles down the road, Ben turned off the interstate and took winding backroads into more forested lands. Hudson got nervous, suddenly wishing for one of those numerous cops theyâd passed between Sacramento and wherever they were now.
âAre you still going to Seattle?â Hudson finally asked. âWhyâd you pull off?â
âI have a short stop I need to make at an old buddyâs house, and they live off the beaten track. Itâll be another couple of hours before we get back on the road, but I have to do this. Plus, I canât wait till we get into Washington for more of your mouth. I need it now.â
âBut⦠No. The deal was state lines, and already thatâs a really fucked-up thing to do to someone. You didnât mention this when we started outâ¦â
âWell, I got a call in Sacramento when you were off flirting with the waitress. Besides, the missus needs to borrow my buddyâs crib. Heâs letting us use it.â
âWhat? Missus? Crib? Are you married and have a baby on the way?â
Ben gave him a look that reeked of, âYeah, what of it?â
âOh my God! Jesus! Youâre married? And this whole time youâve been cheating on your pregnant wife? What kind of a person are you?â
âA kind one, Iâd say, considering you needed a ride and I was willing to accept blowies as fare. Besides, Tara gags too much ever since she got pregnant. Donât get head anymore.â
Benâs words and what heâd made Hudson part of made Hudson want to retch, so he looked out the passenger window and tried to ignore Benâs rambling about his wife and baby while he figured out what to do. Ben reached for Hudsonâs hand, but Hudson slapped him away.
âNo!â
âYou sure about that?â
âYes, Iâm sure.â Hudson glared at him. âIâm not sucking you off.â
âThatâs too bad.â He nodded and clenched his teeth, making the muscle in his jaw bulge. âFrom here, Portlandâs about forty-five miles, I think. You can walk it. Maybe youâll find a ride between here and there.
