“You’re still sore, aren’t you?” Tuberski asked, wiping the comb on his jeans.
Michael looked at John. Huh? Sore?
John dearly wished that Fenberg would yell at him, or hit him, or give him that glossy black ice sardonic smile that meant, somehow, somewhere, Mike would get even with some satanic inspired practical joke. Like the time in high school Fenberg had stapled him to the garage door for the weekend. But Fenberg just stared straight ahead, rubbing his palms. Tuberski did the same.
An hour later, Fenberg spoke.
“Dead bunnies...” he said, straightening.
“What?”
“She said, ‘dead bunnies.’” Fenberg pictured Elaine’s angelic face, the hair stuck at the temples from the sweat of their love making. The bright, light blue eyes and that biteable lower lip.
“...I’d like to make some tea and talk with you about where we’re going and what we’re going to do about some dead bunnies.” Mitikitski’s words came back to him.
“Oh, God! How could I have been so stupid?!” Fenberg said, still frozen.
“What?” asked Tuberski. “What?”
Fenberg’s eyes darted back and forth. He had gone through this before. With Tracy. He should have remembered. Elaine had been going through these wild emotional swings, up and down. Little things setting her off, making her cry. At other times, she’d get the giggles. The time off from work. GETTING SICK IN THE MORNING — what do you need, Fenberg, a goddamn caveman to chisel the message on your forehead in reverse and hold a mirror to your face? Elaine had been gaining weight, her breasts were getting larger and coming right out and saying, “...dead bunnies?” Christ. The rabbit died. She’s going to have a baby.
“This still doesn’t mean I’m speaking to you,” said Fenberg to his brother. “But somehow, some way, we’ve got to break out of here.”
“No one’s ever broken out of here,” said Tuberski, looking at the bars. “The concrete’s a yard thick, the bars are solid steel.”
“I’m getting out, John. Today. Are you coming with me?”
Tuberski looked at the bars again, then at Mike. “Let’s do it.”
Fenberg put his hands on his hips and paced. A plan. They needed a plan. And then they needed to find Mitikitski. Where the hell could she be?
