Chapter 15

Stone

“What’s on the agenda for today?” West asks, climbing into my truck on Wednesday morning. He has small container of orange juice in hand and one of the company polos on, this one specially ordered for him, so it actually fits. I’m surprised and pleased at how quickly he’s taken to this job. When Dare said he was sort of adrift, I mentally prepared myself for this to be a short lived apprenticeship, but all signs are pointing toward this being a long-term deal, and I couldn’t be happier about it. West is a good kid.

“We’re swinging by the office quick, and then I want to drop in on a potential client to follow up. We had a deal to renovate Wooley’s, but then the owner passed away, and the new owner was a little too overwhelmed to consider having the work done right away. So, I figured we’d stop in and see how he’s doing now. After that, we have a botched DIY deck to save.”

“Sounds good,” he says, taking a sip of his drink. “So, how was your date last night? Uncle Dare just glared at me when I asked.”

I chuckle, kind of glad I’m not the only one who gets the glare from him. “It wasn’t a date. We hung out, ordered food, freed a snake.”

“Freed a snake, huh? Sounds like a fun night,” he jokes, his voice dripping with innuendo.

“Get your head out of the gutter; we actually freed a snake. It was in the house for some reason and we took it to a new home in a field far, far away.”

“Huh.”

“What about you? Did you have a hot date last night?”

“Yeah, no one particularly special though. I’ve been dating around a bit, sowing my wild oats. You know how it is.”

“That I do,” I agree with a chuckle. “Watch out though, because that urge to settle down can sneak up on you out of nowhere, and you won’t know what to do with yourself.”

We pull into the Four Bears parking lot and both get out. I stop at the end of the hallway to mark off botched DIY on the bingo card hanging on the wall and then grin widely.

“Hey, one of you fuckers owes me a round of drinks, I just got a bingo.”

“Dammit, I was so close too,” Ev complains.

“Fuck, that must be on me then, right? I don’t think I have a single box checked off this round,” Ollie says.

“Friday night at Wooley’s, drinks on Ollie,” I declare.

I round the corner with West right behind me and pour myself some coffee, greeting each of my friends with a grin.

“Someone’s in a good mood this morning. You get laid last night, Stoney?” Cole teases.

“Nope,” I answer easily, stirring in some powdered creamer and then taking a sip to check the taste. “I know it’s shocking that something other than sex can put a person in a good mood, but it’s true.”

“Fuck you, I have a lot of interests, thank you very much,” Cole grumbles.
