Chapter 17
After forcing herself to eat every single bite on her plate, Adelia felt rather bloated. She wandered about the castle, trying to feel better, but all she felt was worse and worse. She used to speak with the guards and the maids. Most of them she knew by name. Previously, they would smile at her and seemed to be happy to see her. Now, they would lower their heads and rush by as if her being the Reapee was contagious, and they feared that just by being near her, they risked their name being called next year or the year after.
Perhaps she should start to wear a bell about her neck so that they could all scatter like cowards before they even saw her.
It was with this disillusioned mindset that Adelia returned to her room. She laid down her head on her pillow and attempted to rest as she suspected sleep would not come easily to her.
She refused to think of her upcoming Departure and opted to think of a happier time. Going for rides on Star Sparks had been one of her favorite past times, but that flight upon Zinnasâs back had been such a gay, happy time that she wished she could do so again. The mist had frightened the dragon so, however. Perhaps the dragon would not wish to fly her anywhere for fear that she would direct him back there.
If the dragon were free to fly where he wished, where would he go?
If she were free to travel and roam wherever she wished, where would she go?
Ah, but such thoughts were pointless, were they not? Or perhaps that was precisely what she should do in her limited time left. Why shouldnât she do as she wished? Hadnât she earned that right by nature of being the Reapee?
Adelia rolled over onto her side and stared out the window. Some of the rooms in the castle had stained glass or regular glass, but her windows had no glass at all, just curtains to cover them, but she hadnât bothered to close the curtains before climbing into bed, a fact she appreciated now as she could gaze out and see the twinkling stars. They seemed so full of both light and life, as if they were winking at her to encourage her along the path she must take, a path taken by so many before her.
She exhaled and thought of the previous Reapee, a young boy by the name of Matthieu Toutain. How shocked she had been to learn that the boy who appeared twelve had actually been seventeen and older than she was! He had been small in stature, it had seemed to her, because his family had lacked for much. He had no parents but three sisters, all younger than himself, and he struggled to provide for them. He had hunted for their food mostly, which meant the winter months were especially hard on them as he hadn't salt to preserve meat for when the game fled to warmer climes.
