THERE ARE FEW PLACES more hidden than the core of a star. Its light licks off into space, but the heart of the flame remains forever unseen.

What happens in the core can be modeled, of course: the rearrangement of probabilities and affinities transmuting matter to energy. Yet anything happening a trillion times each instant at the centers of billions of stars will eventually hit a snag. Something, invariably, will go wrong. Realities will start to rub away like well-worn pennies.

Most people have faith in the stars. They know how to burn. Their particles are firm in their endless dance. The physics works.

The Godhexi knew better.
