CHAPTER ELEVEN

“You think anyone is home?”

The gate across the driveway to Mae’s home was closed, blocking our path. I pulled into a spot along the curb across the street and slid the vehicle into park.

“Only one way to find out,” Selene said as she moved for the passenger-side door. I could feel the gentle pull of my magic flowing toward her, set to do her bidding.

“Why do I get the feeling that’s code for another round of breaking and entering?” I asked.

A shot of pink sparks flew to the door and Selene leaped out silently onto the sidewalk. “I’ll see where the breeze takes me,” she said before closing the door.

“Gee, why doesn’t that make me feel better?”

My hand went still on the inside handle of my own door, but before I opened it, the gates started to roll away. I blinked and considered Selene, still standing on the sidewalk. What kind of spell did she use now?

An olive green Land Rover rolled to a stop a few feet from the end of the driveway, waiting for the gates to part wide enough to turn off the road. The vehicle’s windows were tinted dark enough I couldn’t make out any definitive details about its driver.

Selene jumped back into the car, closing the door quietly after herself. Her eyes remained trained on the other side of the street, narrowed with the same intensity she usually reserved for her morning squirrel stake outs.

The Land Rover rumbled into the driveway and parked. A tall man with suntanned skin and an athletic build emerged, wearing jeans and a tight black t-shirt that showed off his wiry, but well formed physique. A pair of reflective sunglasses hid his eyes from view.

He jogged around the front of the large vehicle and opened the passenger door, to escort an equally sun-bronzed woman out onto the driveway. She stood nearly to his height—thanks in part to the four-inch spiked heels strapped to her feet. Her platinum blonde hair was slicked back into a sleep ponytail that fell just to the small of her back, where her ample curves were on full display in a shiny blue dress so tight it made me feel like I couldn’t draw a full breath, just looking at the thing.

The blonde tottered around to the back of the vehicle, a little unsteady on her feet. Though whether it was due to the absurdly high heels, or a drink or two, I couldn’t be sure.

All I knew was if I tried on shoes like that, I’d land myself in urgent care with record speed.

The man, Marcus, I had to assume, lifted the gate on the back of the vehicle and the woman giggled as she leaned forward, and—

“Whoa there!” Selene barked, adverting her eyes as the woman’s barely-there undergarments peeked out to say howdy.

Together, they carried a tall, metal frame to the patch of grass wedged between the sidewalk and the brick fence surrounding the front yard. I couldn’t read what
