We went on to Rome, birthplace of civilization’s plumbing, then up to Tuscany to see the quarries, because I wanted to know everything I could about great marble. We flew from there to Istanbul, which in Catholic school the nuns talked about as Constantinople. There along the Bosporus, between two seas, with all the white buildings and spires, it was the most like what Florida was becoming of anything we’d seen. My team and I decided to rename our outfit Byzantium Kitchen and Bath.

Well, this may seem a sidetrack, but it matters to what happened. Because I’d seen that the most important factors were clean lines, water, and reflection. We designed vast master baths with lots of mirrors and walk-in shower-spas. And over by a window, floor-to-ceiling glass, we’d place one luxurious freestanding tub, looking out at sky and sea. Pictures of the bathtub and so much blue were amazingly persuasive. (And I guarantee you nobody thought of this in Hallandale, back when — you could go into any older place there and find the bathrooms politely tucked away. Bay windows were for living rooms.) Also, we knew bathrooms must outnumber bedrooms. Look at listings today and you’ll see: Two beds/three baths, two million. Three beds/five baths, seven million. And up from there.

So I reached the point where we had the contract for what was to be the most chichi expensive tower to date in Hallandale, an architect’s confection of smoked glass designed with branchings so it could have as many penthouses as possible, facing the ocean, the Intracoastal, or, most extravagantly, both.
